Arthritic and Rheumatic Pain

Arthritic and Rheumatic Pain relief, Chester

What is arthritis and what causes it?

Arthritis literally means “inflammation within the joint itself” and it is a condition associated with pain in one or more joints of the body. Joints feel stiff and sore and it can be extremely uncomfortable.

types of arthritis

There are many type of arthritis, the most common of which is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a relatively common musculoskeletal disorder, with a high prevalence that increases with age. It is a degenerative joint disease marked by degeneration of the articular cartilage, hypertrophy at the bone margins and changes in the synovial membrane. It is generally known as “wear and tear” of the joints. It commonly affects the knees, hips and low back. However, not all pain is due to arthritis. Pain experienced in joint or joints may simply be the product of localized inflammation or damage to the associated soft tissues as a result of sporting injury or minor trauma of any nature.

Other less common type of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition and therefore not specifically related to “wear and tear”.

How can Osteopathy help?

To date, there is no cure for osteoarthritis, so the principles of management are to control pain, improve function and reduce disability (Job, 2017). Although, osteopathy cannot reverse the arthritis, our wide range of effective articulatory and soft tissues techniques, life style advice and exercise prescription can help reduce the pain and stiffness experienced in the joints. This in some ways, will help break the vicious circle of disability linked to osteoarthritis and slow down the degenerative process.
